Being Bodies
Buddhist Women on the Paradox of Embodiment
By Lenore Friedman, Susan Moon
The relationship between body and mind has always been a topic of speculation and spirited
discussion. The authors of the pieces contained in this anthology address the problem from the unique dual
perspective of being women and being students of Buddhism.
"In speaking very personally about their own experience, from
birth to menopause to sickness and death, the women whose voices are collected in these essays have hit universal
chords for all women who are spiritual seekers."—Publishers Weekly

Dakini's Warm Breath
The Feminine Principle in Tibetan Buddhism
The primary emblem of the feminine in Tibetan Buddhism is the dakini, or "sky-dancer," a
semi-wrathful spirit-woman who manifests in visions, dreams, and meditation experiences. Western scholars and
interpreters of the dakini, influenced by Jungian psychology and feminist goddess theology, have shaped a
contemporary critique of Tibetan Buddhism in which the dakini is seen as a psychological "shadow," a feminine
savior, or an objectified product of patriarchal fantasy. According to Judith Simmer-Brown—who writes from the
point of view of an experienced practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism—such interpretations are inadequate.

Women Reflect on the Challenges and Rewards of Motherhood
Motherhood can be one of the most intense and transformative experiences of a woman's life.
While there are many books that offer the "do's and don'ts" of effective parenting, few offer guidance on
navigating the tumultuous inner experience of being a mother, with all its joy, pain, change, and uncertainty. This
collection of writing by psychologists, poets, novelists, spiritual teachers, and everyday moms explores the rich,
transformative journey of motherhood.
-
Poet and novelist Louise Erdrich captures the sheer wonder and awe of early
motherhood.
-
Self-described "hip momma" Ariel Gore reflects on the challenges of dealing with her
daughter's adolescent rebellion.
-
Journalist Joan Peters highlights the rise of the "Power Mom" and the risks of
overparenting to our children and ourselves.
-
Zen teacher Cheri Huber shares a spiritual perspective: sometimes it's us parents who
need a "time out" so that we can be more fully present and loving with our children.

The Heart and Soul of Sex
Making the ISIS Connection
Drawing on the results of her unique national sex survey—and on decades of clinical practice as
a sex therapist—Gina Ogden offers a revolutionary exploration of women's sexual experience. The best sex, say
thousands of women, doesn't just happen in the body. It is multidimensional, connecting body, mind, heart, and
soul. In The Heart and Soul of Sex,Ogden coaches readers to fully realize the physical, emotional, mental,
and spiritual aspects of sex, making what she calls the "ISIS Connection."
Throughout the book are firsthand stories of survey respondents, offering examples of how
ordinary women—from ages eighteen to eighty-six and from many backgrounds—have found their own way to sexual
expression that is deeply satisfying and even life-changing. The Heart and Soul of Sex takes the reader on
a journey beyond the usual emphasis on performance, including practical exercises that can be done alone or with a
partner. Ogden shows us that we can be much more than we've been told—not just fun and exciting but deeply healing,
magical, and transformative.
